Multi-racial

Race is a method of categorizing individuals and population groups which is not based on any biologically valid distinctions between the genetic make-up of differently identified races. Racial categorization is frequently based on phenotypical differences; that is differences of facial characteristics, skin color and so forth. Hence, race is a social construct that downplays the extent to which sectors of the population may actually form a discrete group; that is share certain characteristics on the basis of common historical origin, close-knit patterns of social interaction, and a sense of common identity.

Racially defined group in the stratification system of the wider society partly reflects the historical circumstances in which it flourishes. In the case of Singapore, multi-racialism developed because of colonialism. To simplified the process of identifying various races of people coming to Singapore in the 19th century, the colonial government divided up the population into four distinct groups namely, Chinese, Malay, Indian and others and this system has since sunk it’s root.

Singapore, with its highly heterogeneous population, poses a challenge to the government. In order to incorporate this diverse group, a common and accepted sense of nationhood has to be established. Multi-racialism is what the government wants Singapore to build on. Efforts of government include manipulating unity in racial diversity.

Categorizing population in this way (multi-racialism) may have negative consequences on the society. Racial attitudes or racial discrimination by the majority of the population can occur if the issue is not handled properly.
